Objective for processing

The aims of this study are: -

To maintain Health and Safety Executive's Mesothelioma and Asbestosis Registers so as to provide accurate statistics on trends of the incidence of mesothelioma and asbestosis, important and potentially preventable causes of work-related disability and death.

To provide information on incidence of these diseases, an important long-term measure of the justification for and continuing effectiveness of stringent work-place measures for the control of asbestos exposure.

To inform policy developments to provide a better focus of these control measures and the regulations to enforce them.

To allow statistical modelling of the future burden of mesothelioma deaths in Great Britain. Information on rising incidence of mesothelioma, projected to continue for some years yet has implications for those providing care, for the UK's no fault compensation system for work-related disease and injury, and for the UK insurance industry.
